Uber’s CEO, Dara Khosrowshahi, Resigns From Aurora Board of Directors
Dara Khosrowshahi Leaves Aurora Innovation Board, Citing Desire to Focus on Uber Responsibilities
In a recent regulatory filing, it has been announced that Dara Khosrowshahi, the CEO of ride-hailing giant Uber, is resigning from the board of autonomous vehicle technology company Aurora Innovation. The move is effective as of Tuesday and comes after nearly three years of service with the company.
Khosrowshahi’s Decision
According to the filing, Khosrowshahi has chosen to leave the board due to his desire to focus on his ongoing responsibilities as CEO of Uber. This decision marks a significant development in the relationship between Uber and Aurora Innovation, which dates back to 2020 when Uber offloaded its self-driving unit, Uber ATG, to Aurora.
Aurora’s Board Membership
Khosrowshahi joined Aurora’s board as part of the deal that saw Uber invest $400 million into the company. This investment gave Uber a 26% stake in the combined entity and marked one of the earliest collaborations between the two companies. Through its freight brokerage platform, Uber Freight, the ride-hailing giant has maintained a connection with Aurora.
Multi-Year Collaboration
In June of this year, Uber and Aurora announced a multi-year collaboration to put trucks powered by Aurora’s technology on the Uber Freight network. While the partnership between the two companies is significant, it is not exclusive. Uber also has a deal with Waabi, the self-driving truck startup founded by Raquel Urtasun, who previously served as chief scientist and head of R&D at Uber ATG.
New Board Member
Shailen Bhatt, senior vice president and chief operating officer for AtkinsRéalis, will take Khosrowshahi’s place on the board. With a background working for the Federal Highway Administration, Bhatt brings a wealth of experience to the role.
Recent Executive Departures
This news comes just weeks after Nolan Shenai, Aurora’s general counsel, announced his intention to step down effective January 6, 2025. Ossa Fisher, Aurora’s president, will take over Shenai’s responsibilities while the company considers his replacement.
Aurora Innovation Overview
Aurora Innovation is a leading autonomous vehicle technology company that has made significant strides in recent years. The company has developed advanced self-driving systems for trucks and other vehicles, and its technology has been deployed on several major highways across North America.
