New Zealand Launches Nationally Available Satellite Texting Service via Starlink

One NZ has achieved a significant milestone by becoming the first telecommunications company globally to power a nationwide satellite text messaging service via SpaceX’s Starlink. This achievement marks a major breakthrough in the adoption of satellite-based connectivity solutions.

Starlink Partnerships Across the Globe

SpaceX has been actively partnering with various organizations worldwide to expand its reach and services. In addition to One NZ, partners have been secured in Canada, Australia, Japan, Peru, Switzerland, and Chile. Furthermore, a partnership has also been established with T-Mobile in the US, paving the way for the integration of Starlink’s satellite-to-cell technology into existing mobile networks.

Device Support: Limited but Expected to Expand

At present, only four phone models are supported by One NZ’s Satellite TXT service:

  • Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 6
  • Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6
  • Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra
  • OPPO Find X8 Pro

However, eligibility for the service is expected to expand to more devices next year. As technology continues to advance and improve, we can anticipate seeing a wider range of compatible phones and devices.

Initial Rollout: Performance and Future Expectations

During the initial rollout phase, One NZ expects most text messages to be sent and received within three minutes. However, as Joe Goddard, Experience and Commercial Director at One NZ, notes:

  • "We continue to test the capabilities of One NZ Satellite TXT, and this is an initial service that will get better."
  • "For example, text messages will take longer to send but will get quicker over time."

This indicates that there may be some limitations during the early stages of the service. Nevertheless, as development progresses, we can anticipate improvements in performance.

Eligibility for Existing Customers

One NZ has announced that existing customers on paid-monthly plans will have access to the Satellite TXT service at no additional cost. However, it remains unclear whether new customers or those on other contracts will be required to pay an additional fee to utilize satellite-to-cell coverage.

Starlink’s Text-by-Satellite Service: Previous Piloting

Prior to its nationwide deployment in New Zealand, Starlink’s text-by-satellite service was piloted with T-Mobile customers affected by Hurricane Helene and Hurricane Milton in October. In November, T-Mobile received FCC approval for the service, clearing the way for further development.

T-Mobile’s Participation in US Starlink Beta Program

T-Mobile will be signing up customers to test the US Starlink beta program early next year. This marks a significant step forward in the integration of satellite-to-cell technology into existing mobile networks, enabling seamless connectivity and communication services.

In conclusion, One NZ’s achievement of nationwide coverage for its Satellite TXT service via SpaceX’s Starlink represents a major milestone in the adoption of satellite-based solutions. As development continues to progress and partnerships grow, we can anticipate improved performance, expanded device support, and increased accessibility for users worldwide.
